OTT video services see opportunity to differentiate...

4K or Ultra HD is the future, but it’s a marathon, not a sprint to higher resolutions.  And while 1080p TV screens are the norm and mobile screen resolutions continue to climb, plenty of streamed HD content is still distributed in 720p or lower.  Over-the-top (OTT) services such as Netflix, VUDU, and M-GO, which exclusively distribute content over the Internet, are more eager to embrace 1080p and Ultra HD for connected CE devices in order to appear more innovative, according to ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com).

Meanwhile, traditional distributors, with regards to TV Everywhere content, are more likely to settle for 720p as they consider smartphones and tablets the primary targets; continuing to leverage existing Pay TV services as their "main" distribution channel for TVs – OTT operators likewise favor lower resolutions for mobile devices.

OTT (over-the-top) streamer shipments are forecast to rise...

The overall US video entertainment market (subscription Pay-TV, box office, packaged home video, Pay-TV VoD and paid-for online video) continues to grow in low single digits, reaching $120 billion in 2013 — a 2% increase on 2012 — and is on track to peak at $123 billion in 2015, according to the latest industry report from Futuresource Consulting (www.futuresource-consulting.com).

IDC: Worldwide IT market showing tentative signs of...

According to new data from the IDC research group (www.idc.com), recent volatility will gradually give way to a more positive outlook for IT spending in the second half of 2014.

With the U.S. and other mature economies mostly heading in the right direction and a significant commercial PC refresh cycle already underway, improvements in business confidence are set to drive a moderate infrastructure upgrade cycle over the next 12-18 months, while investments in software and services will continue to accelerate, says the research group.

Worldwide IT spending is now forecast to increase by 4.5% in 2014 at constant currency, or 4.1% in U.S. dollars. A significant proportion of this growth is still being driven by smartphones – IT spending excluding mobile phones will increase by just 3.1% this year in constant currency (2.8% in U.S. dollars).

Aside from smartphones, the strongest growth will come from software,...

New research just released by GVA Connect (gatewaydatacentre.co.uk), the data center specialist division of property adviser GVA, showed that the take-up of data center space by end users such as corporate occupiers, government agencies and IT Integrators more than doubled in the first half of 2014 compared to this time last year.

"With continued acquisition by data center operators through 2013 and a sharp increase of end user take up in Q1/2014, our research shows the continued growth in take up of both co-location and wholesale data centre space by end users which is rewarding those commitments by operators to expand existing sites as well as developing new sites," says GVA Connect director Charles Carden.

Total take up (including operators and end users) in H1/2014 increased by 14% compared to the same period in 2013. Within that, the volume of end user transactions more than doubled from a total of 13MW in H1/2013 to 30MW in H1/2014.

Will TV providers get beaten to the punch by Smart TVs...

Smart applications and more interaction with the TV, both with different devices and for better navigation without a cumbersome TV remote, are priorities for consumers’ next TV purchase in the UK and US.

A recent study from the Digital Home Observatory (DHO) at Strategy Analytics (www.strategyanalytics.com) surveying consumers in the UK and USA, found that functionalities such as being able to mirror a smartphone’s display, or providing a simplified human-machine interface (HMI), for example through voice or gesture control, were highly appealing features. However, such capabilities come at a cost. Rather than snapping up a more expensive smart TV, consumers are now looking to less costly media solutions such as Google Chromecastor and Roku, to provide such features.

"As traditional TV continues to be threatened by over-the-top subscription based video-on-demand (OTT SVOD), TV...

Briefly: T-Mobile iPhone sale, Otterbox exploring...

Starting on Wednesday, T-Mobile will offer a discount of up to $50 off the full price of all iPhones, according to a leaked internal memo. The offer will not affect subsidized iPhones, but applies to "device only" (no contract) sales. The discount will vary depending on the model and capacity, notes TmoNews, and is likely a reaction to recent price-cutting of contract phones by retailers like Walmart, which has dropped the price of the iPhone 5c to 97 cents and the iPhone 5s to $79 with a two-year contract....

Seagate Ships First 8TB Hard Drives for Enterprise

Seagate announced Tuesday that has shipped the first 8TB hard drive, a 33 percent increase in capacity from the 6TB enterprise monsters that were announced just last April. The devices come in a standard 3.5-inch form factor, and it doesn't use helium to increase capacity, a concept being pursued by Western Digital. Instead, as noted by Computerworld, Seagate is using a technology called shingled magnetic recording (SMR). The company hasn't announced pricing, and said that it was shipping the drive to "select customers," with wider availability starting next quarter. The 6TB enterprise drive shown below can be purchased for US$599. Now, if I could just get an iPhone with more than 64GB of storage.

T-Mobile offering up to $50 off all iPhone models...

As noted by the folks over at TmoNews, the magenta-branded un-carrier will be offering a discount of up to $50 on all iPhones starting tomorrow. An internal memo leaked from the company indicates that not every model will get the full $50 drop, but at least a few will. The cut comes off of the “device-only price,” or the full price of the phone. Subsidized models won’t be affected, it seems.

This discount is just the latest blow in the ongoing war between U.S. mobile carriers. Sprint recently announced...

Apple to Reportedly Launch Thinner MacBook in Late 2014 or...

Apple will launch a thinner MacBook near the end of this year or early next year, according to a new report from Digitimes. Citing supply chain sources in Taiwan, the report notes that component production has already begun in small volumes. Apple will also reportedly cease production of the 13-inch non-Retina MacBook Pro by the end of 2014.

A report last month claimed that Intel's continued delays of its Broadwell chip may cause Apple to push back the release of its 12-inch MacBook until late this 2014 or early 2015. The 12-inch MacBook is said to include a Retina display and may either be a successor to the MacBook Air or join Apple's current 11-inch and 13-inch models.

A previous report in June stated that Apple would begin...

For a number of years, we relied on separate software systems for voice, instant messaging, content sharing, and video conferencing that simply didn’t provide the ease of use that our people needed. Our employees found that constantly switching between productivity tools, email, and a separate web conferencing application was a hassle. They also felt tethered to their computers, because they lacked the freedom to collaborate from anywhere through their smartphones or other mobile devices.

Beyond these usability concerns, cost was also a major issue. We couldn’t justify the expense of a standalone web conferencing...

Reed Elsevier rallies around Office 365 to...

Today’s post was written by Michael Bouchet, vice president of Infrastructure Services at Reed Elsevier

Reed Elsevier is a world-leading provider of information solutions for professional customers. LexisNexis helps lawyers win cases, Gray’s Anatomy helps doctors save lives, Elsevier BioSource helps scientists make new discoveries. Other Reed Elsevier companies help corporations build commercial relationships, insurance companies assess risk, and government and financial institutions detect fraud.

Our diversity is part of our strength, but it was threatening to become a liability as well. We needed to bring deals to the table that took advantage of our global knowledge assets, but we had a country-specific business model and disparate communication tools. We wanted to enable employees and partners in different offices to put their heads...

Taxonomy Refinement Panel Web Part and faceted...

Over the last months we’ve taken many steps towards enabling search-driven publishing for intranet sites in SharePoint Online. We enabled the Content Search Web Part (CSWP), the cross-site publishing feature, and a new group cache that improves the performance of the CSWP.

Now we’ve enabled two features that previously were available only in SharePoint Server 2013—the Taxonomy Refinement Panel Web Part (TRPWP) and faceted navigation.

Introducing the Taxonomy Refinement Panel Web Part

The Taxonomy Refinement Panel Web Part (TRPWP) is similar in both name and functionality to the Refinement Web Part (RWP). With the RWP, visitors can filter content that’s displayed on a page; for example, they can filter to display only items...

Your SharePoint 2013 farm in Microsoft Azure is just...

The Azure Preview Portal now supports the automated creation of a basic or high-availability SharePoint farm in Microsoft Azure.

You can use your Azure subscription, an Azure trial subscription, or your MSDN subscription to set up your farm.

Setting up a farm in the basic configuration requires three servers: a domain controller, a SQL server, and a SharePoint server.

Setting up a farm in the high-availability configuration involves nine servers: two domain controllers, two SQL servers, a SQL Server quorum server, two SharePoint servers in the application tier, and two SharePoint servers in the front-end web tier.

For either of these two farms, you can...

Legal firm embraces cloud computing, wins case for...

Lawyers at RTR, a criminal defense firm in Miami, Florida, had been using faxes, couriers, and an unreliable server—which impeded productivity. Then one of its lawyers introduced Microsoft Office 365, mobile devices, and smartphones. Now documents are stored online, lawyers access case files in court and at home, on any device, and they use simultaneous coauthoring to create briefs. Productivity is up by an estimated 25 percent.

For more, read the RTR case study.

Integreon connects every part of its global business...

Bob Gogel is CEO of Integreon.

To provide our clients with highly scalable legal, research, and document support services from our 17 office locations around the world, we depend on fast, flexible communication technology.

Video showcases iOS app built with Xojo

Xojo Inc., the company formerly known as Real Software, has posted a video of an iOS app that was built with Xojo. Xojo is an object-oriented, cross-platform software development tool that enables developers to create software for OS X, Windows, Linux, the web and mobile.

The video showcases all the native controls and gives an overview of Xojo's support for building iOS apps. Building native iOS apps with Xojo is the same as building a web or desktop app as you do today. You can view the video at http://tinyurl.com/nvexpk7 .

Developers can use the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) of Xojo for free, and will only need to purchase a license once they want to build a distributable version of their application. Licenses are purchased per target platform, including Web, Desktop, Database, Console, and Xojo Pro, which is a bundle license that includes all deployment licenses plus an added...

A look at SkySafari for iOS, Mac OS X and 2012 DA14

This Friday, Feb. 15, a 180,000-ton asteroid with the thrilling name of "2012 DA14" will fly past the Earth. Don't worry, we're not talking a "Deep Impact" scenario. Which is good, right? And you can follow the asteroid using Apple devices.

The 50-meter space rock will come within 17,200 miles of earth -- that's closer than our orbiting geosynchronous communication satellites. Although we don't have to worry about a collision, the passage of 2012 DA14 is a record close approach to the Earth for an object of this size.

Southern Stars has released update to its SkySafari Plus and Pro apps for iOS, Mac OS X, and Android to let you track 2012 DA14. If you want to track the asteroid you'll want the updated apps. Why? Because the Earth's gravity affects the asteroid's orbit so severely, most desktop planetarium programs -- and all other mobile apps -- will completely fail to predict the asteroid's position correctly, says Southern Stars founder Tim DeBenedictis.
