I wrote up a little document on how I opened and hacked my iCarPlay. iPod FM transmitters all seem to have the same two problems: 1) they don't put out enough RF to reliably quiet the radio and 2) when they do, the audio is so low you have to turn the radio up a LOT and the resulting increased background noise ruins much of the joy.
My hack fixes both of these problems by adding an external antenna (as you've seen in many of the iTrip hacks) and also modifying the audio input circuitry. I documented what I did in a 135k pdf file attached here. Enjoy!
