"The trials and tribulations of the MacMod booth" Sunday, Jan 7 2007 (2 days before the show) Jacob Thomason, MacMod Editor in Chief, arrived on the red eye into San Francisco International. In order to save money, he had arranged to stay with an old friend who lived in the area. Unfortunately that meant he was staying in Palo Alto. After catching up on some sleep, JT (we'll just call him that for right now) decided to scout out the expo floor and see what items had arrived from the modders and vendors around the nation. Not surprisingly, only 1 box was sitting at the booth. A quick call you me (Anthony King) let me know things weren't starting off well. We did have tables with skirts (YAY!) but no electrical outlets! We had tried to pull together an informative and interesting booth on a very tight schedule but time wasn't on our side from the start. Here's the list we started with: M3 remote controlled Mac mini - didn't get enough notice to ship affordably from Australia Bang & Olufson Mac - didn't get enough notice to ship affordably from Australia Real Power Mac - didn't get shipped in time The Analog G3 - still under development, but Max Lewis manages to get it show-worthy in time Blue Ice & Pyramac - Very delicate and besides, MacWorld Mag broke it last time they shipped it...bummer iTablet - Joseph sold it...besides we have the Modbook now Wallstreet Road Warrior - could not be reached in time. emails bounced. Killer Bee - Daily driver and can't be sent off for that long Liquid Cooling Kit - couldn't be had in time Frankintosh S900 - In the SF area and would be dropped off Necromac & Necromac II - John Hart would bring it to the show iPot - Ready to go. It was the lonely box there on Sunday afternoon Laptop upgrade examples - Daystar managed to get it there just under the wire iMac upgrade examples - Demo wasn't put together in time Processor upgrades - FastMac and OWC both were going to deliver the goods from their booth. That didn't make it any quicker and they got in just under the wire too. Sonnet wasn't even returning phone calls. Painting Demo - John Hart was bringing his painting tools and some samples Macworld Community Mod Project - We purchased a G3 PowerMac shell and John Hart had painted it white so that people could tag it with their name or drawing. Part of the nightmare before expo was the fact that half of the items we had attempted to bring to Macworld didn't make it due to one reason or another (mostly time). That Sunday call from jacob had me worried because the 20'x20' booth was all of a sudden a very difficult thing to fill. Friday I had shipped a 10' tall 3.33' wide PVC tower that i had constructed in my back yard. At a total shipping and construction cost of $115 this thing was to be the centerpiece of the booth. We were expecting it to arrive on Monday during set up, but for some reason it made it from GA to CA in less than 24 hours and there was no one to claim it at Moscone. The USPS tracking # said it was sitting in a post office somewhere near the expo. JT couldn't do much that day except hope for the best on Monday. Jacob Head was due to arrive on the red eye later that night and he'd have to find a way to pick him up since Caltrain would already be closed. So far, the booth was lookinglike it would be a massive failure. Would it turn out like that? More tonight....
