Wolfenstein 3D, Marathon Style
Written by Josh Long
Some of the first mods I ever created were video game mods, made with my old Macintosh Performa 640CD DOS Compatible and my Power Macintosh G3 (Blue & White). I used to love creating new levels, sound effects, and graphics, especially for games like Wolfenstein 3D and Bungie's Marathon series. I even publicly released a mod called ALenstein 3D, which added "Weird Al" Yankovic sound effects and a new title screen to the classic Wolfenstein. That was 8 years ago, in 2001.Imagine my surprise when I discovered that someone had created a Wolfenstein mod for Marathon... in 2009! Read on for more details.
Those who follow @MacMod on Twitter may remember that I tweeted about this back in July. Well, I finally got around to trying it out, and I have to say I like what the modder has done. Zott820 recreated the entire first level of the Mac version of Wolfenstein 3D for the Marathon/Aleph One engine.
For those who don't know, I suppose I should back up and briefly explain that Wolf3D was one of the original first-person shooter games, a precursor to games like DOOM, Quake, etc. Bungie's Marathon games, in particular Durandal and Infinity, were in my opinion among the best games available for the Mac, and I used to love playing them. Marathon Infinity was intended to be Bungie's final chapter in the series, but they left it open to user-generated content by providing their own editing tools for creating new scenarios. Later, Bungie open-sourced the engine and released the original game files to the public for free. Amazingly, the engine (known as Aleph One) is still under active development today.
