Dominator G4
Written by Ixlam
After an Upgrade from 933Mhz I found my Dual 1 ghz ran much hotter.
I needed cooling better than stock but did not find any real cooling solutions for older Macs.
I did not want to modify the clean lines of the G4 case...
And so, with a little research planing and rumaging, I came up with this subtle but effective solution of my own.

First I removed the speaker, and speaker housing (metal & plastic cover)
Then shaped some steel mesh to fit the hole and put a dab of silicone to hold it in place. |
![]() This now acts as an air intake... It blends well with the case design and works well. |
| Here we have the rear. This is where it got more involving... |
| First off I needed to cut and grind away the vents to the size of the total width of the dominator fan-set (Marked in red) . Then I drilled out 2 holes (marked in blue) for screws I used to fasten the fan to the rear of the case. |

Using some more mesh i shaped a grill for the rear of the case where I installed my fans by screwing and snadwiching the grill in between the case and the fan frame. |
| to create the shroud I shaped some sheet metal into a "U" shape or "hood" to fit over the heat sink making something like a tunnel around the heat sink by pushing in the "hoods" edges in between the first and last 2 fins of the heatsink. |

I found some (real) duct tape and used it to extend the "tunnel" to the rear fan. |

I used sticky velcro strips to better hold the front fan in place. This also makes it (semi) removable and reduces vibration a little. |
|
To increase airflow and make space for the front fan, I discarded the power supply's bracket/support. I realised that the depth of the CD bracket didn't give the fans much room to "breathe". I fixed that by grinding down and re-shaping the CD bracket. Now theres about 1" between the front of the fans and the back of the DVDR. |
![]() I also cut the stamped metal from the front of the large Case fan. Flipped the fan around so it would pull air in, and added a chromed grill. This now forces all "fresh" and cool air in from the bottom of the case and hot (rising) air is exhausted out the top and from the rear of the power supply. |

| To finish up , I carefully tucked wires and put sleeving on the rest to clean up the inside. |

here is a link to one, and some more pics of it. Enjoy (I just like it for the specs and pics.
BTW, a/d/s and zapco, are both car audio amps, but can easily be converted and still will put out INSANE quality sound.

RIck B there are plenty of mkintosh amps going around. May I recommend zapco, or a/d/s also. Just as good as the mk's IMO for a lot less.
none the less, they are still dope amps.

Best thing to do is oust that 120mm fan from inside the case and replace with a quiet 120mm if you don't like how loud it is.
Not that it matters to me I ousted every fan on my qs minus the psu fan. Water is the way to go if ya hate noise.

@ixlam Are you *sure* there's no temperature sensor? Even my stock Blue & White G3/400 had a sensor on the processor. I recommend trying the Dashboard widget iStat Pro: http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/ -- it ought to be able to pick up a temperature reading.
@987687 Nice one! ^_^

tape is the best tool to have in the toolbox sometimes.
I did something like this before a few years ago but with foam board and electrical tape. It was done with a PC though.
By chance is there a before and after for the temps?
