Written by Chris Tangora
April 1, 2009 — Lauren De Long, aka 'Lauren', the actress who plays a recent college grad in Microsoft's recent advertisements will be seeing more of Microsoft & Best Buy in the near future, but this time in the court room.According to our L.A. sources the actress is suing Microsoft & Best Buy over the laptop they bought her. The information is still coming in so we'll keep you up to date throughout the day with what we find out, but follow the jump to see what we know so far ...
(UPDATED 8:05 PM PDT)
Lauren (who is shooting a 7/11 commercial next) was given the laptop by Microsoft as part of the payment, according to an annoymous Microsoft accountant. This laptop was purchased by Microsoft and and given to Best Buy to hold onto. Lauren would do some shots in the store, then get the laptop outside. The laptop was a supposed to be a basic laptop right off the shelf with no warranty or other packages, but that wasn't the case. Apparently it had been sitting around Best Buy's help desk for a few weeks while filming crews worked out permits and green card issues.
After the commercial shoot Lauren brought it home and started setting up the the new laptop. There was already an account setup for her, but she thought that was normal. Lauren noticed the laptop getting a bit slugish after she checked her horoscope and bank account, which she thought was strange for a new laptop. She continued checking it and it continued to slow down. She then got a phone call from her bank asking about recent purchases. All of this finally clicked in her brain.
The laptop was hacked. She was given a laptop that had an active virus on it sending her information out to an unknown hacker somewhere in Siberia. The hackers had already taken control and gotten her banking password. When she contacted Microsoft to complain about this she was put on hold for 4 hours. She said to herself that if she had to wait one more minute she would hang up the phone and do something drastic, so after 4:01 on the phone, Lauren hanged up the phone. It was then that she decided she need a lawyer. The case will probably be settled out of court and you won't hear about it anywhere else. This one is going to be swept under the rug.
We'll post more info as soon as we get it.
More info about Lauren available at Apple 2.0 & IMDB listing
10:28 AM PDT — Our sources indicate that the laptop didn't come with any antivirus software on it, but after browsing the Web for a few minutes with Internet Explorer, her computer prompted her to purchase "Antivirus 2009" for just $49.95. She closed the window, but she kept getting alerts every few minutes, finally including an alert claiming that she had dozens of viruses, so she went ahead and gave them her credit card number. Strangely, her computer speed hasn't improved since then. More details as they become available.
8:05 PM PDT — We just got word from our sources that Lauren decided to return her terrible HP Pavilion laptop to Best Buy. She used a friend's computer to search eBay and found a MacBook Pro 17", 2.16 GHz, for only $800.00. Microsoft decided to settle out of court for attorney's fees, damages for the humiliation of being known nationwide as an "I'm a PC" sellout, and of course, the cost of Lauren's Apple notebook.

She should have taken the money, she will probably get a "special" Mac Book just like she got a "Special" Windows unit. Best Buy is not known for their product integrity. Bought a car stereo from them, thankfully I was lazy and paid 50 bucks to have them install it. Tech pulls my truck into the bay, opens up the unit pulls it out, says a nice four letter word, comes in and tells me "you aren't going to "believe this" The box had a USED Swap meet deck in it. It was a "sealed" unit also. Best Buy is as bad as W** Mart in this.
