Dual 500GB Mac Mini
Written by Chris Tangora
I would've posted this one earlier, but I've been in the middle of a fierce battle with some Orcs (see Mr. Joy Support the Troops). But now that I've conquered the Orcs and they seem to have withdrawn for the time being, let me get this mod out to you.The 1 Terabyte Mac Mini Mod comes from iFixit and it is one that they sell, so you can do it to your Mini pretty easily. By removing the optical drive (which I strongly believe shouldn't be in a Mini in the first place) iFixit has come up with a way to add a second hard drive to a Mac Mini. It's being posted around the web as a 1TB Mini, but I prefer to look it as a dual 500GB mini, since you are really putting two drives in. More info after the jump.
The mod will run you about $250 and does require a bit of soldering. The power supply for the second drive is the issue. All of the parts you'll need (aside from the soldering iron and solder) are included in the Mac Mini Terrabyte Drive Kit from iFixIt.com. iFixIt has posted the instructions for it online, and it is rated "High Difficulty" on iFixit (requires disassembling almost all of the computer. Not recommended for non-professionals).
This is similar to the idea with MCE Dual Hard Drive kit for the MacBook Pro & PowerBooks. Same principle, different Mac model.
Remove the Optical Drive

Remove the Hard Drive

Solder a new power cable

Plug it all in.

Put it together.

The complete instructions are available on iFixit.com, the same spot where you can buy the kit.
