Hands on Hardware: The Future
This week on Hands on Hardware, we will skip the usual informative review or instructional modification, and speak of a time in the not so distant future when our fanatical, dichotomous love of modding and Apple are all the rage. Have you ever considered what the future may bring--nay, should bring--to our beloved art? Let us venture off the well traveled pathway of the present into the road less travled, into a realm of infinite possibilities that are restricted only by your desire and motivations.
Professionalism, dedication and extensive modification: the three phrases that I believe shape the destiny of Macintosh modification. There's no doubt about it, there's a bright future ahead for Mac modding. We're the new kid on the block that's gaining popularity, perhaps enough to kick that old bully, PC modding, out of the spotlight. When this happens, it will be because we've applied these three terms--the terms that make a great modder.
PROFESSIONALISM
While sites like MacMod help establish credibility to our cause, professionalism often lies in individuals rather than in groups. No doubt MacMod is a wonderful site, but what good is it without the individuals involved? Looking into my Mac-Crystal Ball at the future, I see individuals who are
dedicated to producing world class Macintosh mods for all the world to gaw-gaw at. What defines this professionalism? General know-how, to begin with. As with all things, knowledge is power, and if you want to be a professional, you have to know what you're doing. The net result of that knowledge, that would be the mod itself, is what the world will see. If you start a serious project without a clue, your mod will be nothing but a wasted Macintosh. While knowledge certainly can be gained by first hand tinkering, the nuances of computer electronics are not going to be learned by osmosis, but by tutoring. MacMod is one of the ways to learn, or if you're up to it, to teach. We encourage you to visit our forums regularly to answer and ask many questions.
DEDICATION
Computer modding in general requires dedication. Because of the unique nature of Macintosh modding, it requires even more dedication than with a PC. A good Mac mod is rarely completed without strenious planning, time consuming effort and often a great deal of money . While many individuals think modding is interesting, few are willing to dedicate their resources to make an idea come to life. The future shows us that our success lies with more and more individuals become dedicated to Mac Modding.
EXTREME MODIFICATION
Don't get me wrong, I'm not discounting the "little" mods. Nor am I saying there is no future for "little" modifications. Yet the Mac-Crystal Ball cannot be wrong: the future is in large scale case modifications, mods so extreme that they will easily surpass their pathetic PC cousins. Mods like the Pyramac will give you a glimpse of the future. These mods aren't simply an addition of lights, or perhaps a little overclocking, they're a complete overhaul from the norm.
